Normally I would have lots of comments after Star Awards. This year is no exception. There seems to be a limitless number of things to comment on every year haha.
Countdown
This is plain annoying. While I can’t deny this works to prevent overruns (a constant problem for SA since dunno when), it’s a little too far. I thought the producers could come up with a better idea. The buzzer was too distracting for both the winner and audience. The winner 好不容易 got the chance to step onto the stage but still had to watch the time and couldn’t speak in peace. The audience couldn’t listen in peace too as the buzz was too loud and tended to divert attention away from the speaker’s words.
The buzzer sound was reused from Campus Superstar (and probably other competitions)...eeks!
At the first half of the programme, it looks like the duration of speech has reduced very greatly (each speech felt terribly short compared to last time), so where did the time go?
Circus
This year, the award presenters were given extra time to showcase some kind of mini-performance, whose purpose was unclear. These might have spiced up the presentation a little, but I’m not particularly amused or impressed.
Personally I would prefer if they do away with all these and give the winners more time to talk. After all we watch SA to witness the winners receiving their awards, not watch a magic show, circus, or something that can be often seen in the birdpark. And what’s up with the comic duo?! …and not very funny I think.
And thanks to 'bonk bonk' we have a...
Underrun
Not sure if anyone noticed it. The timer seemed to have frozen at the Top 10 Female. (and the presenters were trying to drag for time) Probably due to the swift award-giving for Top 10 Male. Quite unfair to the other prior winners I think.
Pork Meat
It was really unexpected. 破天荒 in SA’s history. But giving out 2 awards like that out of the blue looks a bit like pie-sharing (aka 分猪肉). While I don’t mind 2 awards, it should at least be properly justified. (why is best supporting actress the only award to have 2 winners? why not best lead actress? etc...)
Thank you so (very) much
Huang Biren always says the same ending phrase after receiving the award every year hahaha...
Her hair today was a bit...
Some trivia about Huang Biren. She started her showbiz career in 1988 (shortly after we were born) and only gained recognition 10 years later upon the drama 家人有约 in 1998. Before that she often took on supporting and forgettable roles. But after the fateful drama, she rose to a leading position and persevered for another 10 years since to 上神台. A really remarkable actress. 所谓长年累月默默耕耘.
The Second
Yay to Ng Hui! She deserves it for making such a memorable role (and name). If the 2nd winner was Lin Meijiao, can I say both my predictions were correct? Haha.
A trivial coincidence?
CCM was limping onto stage when he received his award. Later, Ng Hui was saying if she should limp onto stage... ...
Best Award Presenter: Zeng Guocheng (well, he is not called a ‘host’ for nothing. His way of presentation is the most interesting among all IMO)
Blizzard Storm
Unbelieveable…Joanne Peh beat the veteran Chen Liping and main Nyonya of the show Jeanette Aw. Really 超暴冷. Looks like she was really unprepared since her voice was shaking non-stop. (and here comes the timer to make things worse) No one (almost) expected it too.
But then since I’ve no favourites for this award, I also very glad that Joanne could win too =).
Most Active Winner: Pornsak (Haha…his characteristic smile and forever-enthusiastic gesture…)
Absolute Zero
If not for Hui-ge, I would have gotten a 100% strike for Top 10 Male. (Thanks to the uncles, the results were rather predictable) Congrats to him, finally 出头 le. I would prefer him than Gurmit Singh anyway. Everyone was laughing when his clip was played…lol. His serious-looking face is still too funny to resist. I want to see him speak on stage!
Next year maybe, when the two Lees leave the award for good.
Poor Jeanette
I think she was right. Her name was printed out last deliberately. Especially after she lost out on Best Actress and everyone was wondering if she would 空手而归 again this year even with the Nyonya hype. Glad that kelongs like Michelle Chia is out.

*Want = Nominee I want whom to win
*Think = Nominee I think whom will win
Best Male Lead
Want: Tay Pinghui (will never forget his sinister look in the show)
Think: Chen Hanwei (99% shld be him lah...haha)
Best Female Lead
Want: Any is fine with me
Think: Jeanette Aw (good chance to raise her to the ah-jie status)

Want: Chew Chor Meng (not out of sympathy)
Think: Chew Chor Meng (a breakthrough from his previous roles)
Don't Want: Dai Yangtian (why is his name even included in the first place...)

Think: Lin Mei Jiao or Xiang Yun (this is soooooo difficult to decide)
Best Newcomer:
Think: Dai Yangtian (arbuden?)
Best Drama:
Want: The Golden Path (for various reasons...eg. memories related to NS)
Think: The Little Nyonya (XNR can sweep this award away too)
Top 10 Male:
Tay Pinghui
Qi Yuwu
Mark Lee
Gurmit Singh
Chen Hanwei
Elvin Ng
Christopher Lee
Bryan Wong
Pornsak
Zheng Geping
Top 10 Female:

Quan Yifeng
Kym Ng
Rui En
Fiona Xie
Joanne Peh
Xiang Yun
Jessica Liu
Can strike at least 60% right? Haha.
Anyway don't you guys think that the special guests this year are rather disappointing? Especially for a person who don't watch HK dramas. To make things 'worse', Rainie backed out last minute too.
Side-track a bit. The weather these days is really eccentric. First we had sudden rain, then few days ago super strong winds blew, now it is unbearably hot and humid. Argh.

Diversion
Though it’s the reading week, you can’t expect anyone to study all the way right? It would be really grueling to sit through 10+ hours per day reading textbooks and lecture notes. Some kind of diversion is definitely needed.
For the past few days I’ve been playing around with these mini games:
Spot The Difference

Ever seen this game in arcades? Without spending a single cent, we can get to play this addictive game through Facebook! The difficulty is on-par with those arcade versions. Don’t expect it to be easy...
One downside is, each player (facebook user) is only given 2 plays (credits) per day. Not a bad thing since I would keep playing non-stop if it were unlimited. Haha.
Can You Spot It?

This is from the same series as Spot The Difference. I love photo-related games! ^_^ You are supposed to point out the actual position in the full photo, given partial image extracts. Sounds easy? Not quite.
You can find many other photo/picture-related games in Facebook too!
Gravity Master

Not from Facebook but this site:
http://www.physicsgames.net/game/Gravity_Master.html
Well this is a physics game, so you definitely need to crack a bit of brain. This is one of the more addictive games in the site. After few hours of perseverance, I’m proud to announce that I’ve completed all the levels! =) It may not look easy, but it’s actually not that difficult once you have realized certain convenient tricks. Anyone who wants to complete the levels can feel free to ask me for tips =p.
Destacker
http://www.physicsgames.net/game/Destacker.html

From same physics game site. Rather than stacking blocks like tetris, you are now supposed to destroy it! Muhahaha…. (Tip: getting power ups really helps)
Redstar Fall
http://www.physicsgames.net/game/Redstar_Fall.html

Can’t get enough of destroying things? Here is another game from the same site. But this time you should destroy certain blocks selectively such that the star can land safely on the platform. Not hard at all...
By the way, there are sooooo many games in that site. Haven’t got the time to try most of them yet. You might probably find a game more interesting than any of these.
Farm Town

Obviously this game is about farming crops. A long term game in Facebook that needs some level of commitment. Its simplicity is one thing that attracted me. However I think I will stop playing the moment exams are over haha… since there are much better games out there. Anyway if anyone wants to start playing, please tell me first so that I can add you as my neighbour.

Nonbiri
I am sooo looking forward to the coming holidays!
Yeah I know it's probably not the time to say this when the exams are around the corner. Previously I mentioned that I hardly have any time to doing anything except school work. Looks like the workload was suddenly cleared by the long weekend last week. So actually since last Friday I was quite free, surfing Facebook, typing entries and such. Yes, I know I'm supposed to study.
But then studying is really boring. Not that I've already known everything and there is no need to study, but reading through the entire lecture notes and textbook chapters can be quite grueling. Especially when there is a chance that I might forget what I studied within a week.
Don't misunderstand me though. I'm not discouraging anyone to study. Personally I think these few days or two serves as a good break for me after the past n busy weeks. I would probably slacken a little before burying myself into books (and notes) again.

Immersed in Entertainment
Listening to radio can be so fun!
Well, it's not as if I just started listening to radio, but the recent revamp of programmes in YES933 has made me look forward to listening every night.
The current 11pm to 12pm timeslot, 两只大白鲨, is hosted by Zhou Chongqing and Ivy. This pair is really really funny! Ivy keeps getting teased for her tomboyish-ness. And we know how contagious CQ's explosive laughter can be.
The funniest part of the program is the 玩笑PK场, where 2 listeners will call in and tell a joke either on CQ's side or Ivy's side. The rest of the listeners will then SMS vote for the funnier joke, or rather, whichever DJ they wish to side with. The DJ with more losses over a span of 5 weekdays would have to do a humiliating forfeit. Actually, the funny thing is not the jokes, but the numerous blasts of teasing. =p
The last forfeit was done by Ivy, who had to wear a wedding gown to the studio...
*Anyway other forfeit videos like Ivy wearing bra on head and CQ applying lipstick can be found in youtube too. =p*
The remarkable thing is, this programme is not only well-received by listeners like us, but also within Mediacorp departments (other DJs, celebrities, superiors, admin staff, etc). These people would usually gather at the studio every Monday night and watch the forfeit, haha.
Then there is also 给你4个字, sponsored by Singapore Swimming Pool. The DJs will form funny sentences using a 成语. The teasing never stops...haha.
Besides 两只大白鲨, there is a weekly programme hosted by Peifen and Ivy every Saturday night 10pm to 11pm called Way Too Fun (WTF). Basically it's a no-brainer programme introducing wacky stuffs, though not as funny as the 两只大白鲨. It also has a forfeit segment too. (Why do DJs like doing forfeits so much?!) These are the video clips of two of the forfeits done so far. Wearing a winter suit in Ikea and robbing McDonalds...
Recently IWeekly underwent a revamp too. The amount of contents has increased by a huge proportion, while maintaining the same price. Regretted not having time to read through everything in the past few issues...

Nippon, here I come!
Actually weeks ago I tried my luck and applied for a cultural exchange programme to Japan. Here's the flyer:
http://courseware.nus.edu.sg/e-raion/document/KEEP2009/KEEP2009_Flyer.pdf
Basically KEEP is a study and experience programme to Kyushu. It's not a really an overseas exchange programme where you study a module or two in the local university, since the duration is only one week. It's more like a enjoyment trip and exposure tour haha.
I didn't intend to disclose this matter unless I'm really accepted. But now I'm extremely pleased to announce that: I'VE GOT IT!
Yup, it was a surprise indeed when I received the email this morning. This is truly unexpected as I thought the response will be overwhelming and being only a Year 1 student, my chances were slim compared to seniors who had more priority. Furthermore I've only taken one Japanese module in NUS.
Glad to have the chance to go overseas again, after a long 10 years wait. I wonder how a plane interior looks like now...
Of course, this will provide a good opportunity to practice my half-past-six Japanese and interact more with native Japanese. Perhaps I could even make a friend or two. Yippee!
Let's not have too high an expectation. Just see how it goes.
Luckily I have no ICT interfering with my application. Hopefully this continues for the rest of my university life haha.
One thing I'm worrying now is $$$. Looks like there isn't much subsidy. $2000+++ is indeed quite a lot for a 7-day trip. With Japanese Yen getting stronger and stronger, the exchange rate is really terrible. Most people are saying this is not a good time to visit Japan, but well...such opportunity rarely comes by isn't it?
About 3 months more... tanoshimi ni shiteimasu!
