Comments on Star Awards 2nd Night

Quite satisfied with the results overall. Most got what they deserved. And quite a few winners said things like “this is my first in N years.”

For Zhu Houren, N = 16
For Constance Song, N = 12
For Zhou Chongqing, N = 24
For Pan Ling Ling (post ceremony award), N = 10

Felt especially happy for Chongqing. Not only can he perform well on TV, his radio programmes are also interesting and funny to listen to.

Talkative newscaster

The annoying countdown timer is not totally gone. Instead of a blaring ‘beep’, it has changed into a low droning tone. Fine, at least this is more ‘professional’ and doesn’t interrupt the speech too much.

But there are still very talkative people around, like Zeng Yueli. Despite the microphone being cut off and the background music started to play, she was still trying to speak through the mic and thanking people. So what the audience saw was only her actions but no voice. Looked a bit funny haha.

Even though the ceremony was split into two nights, the problem of overrunning still persists. And I’m still annoyed by the fact that award winners are rushed to make their speech. (they are given 90 seconds each by the way) For emotional winners like Constance Song, not only she had to fight back her tears, she had to fight with time too. On the other hand some award presenters were rather boring and taking up precious time. The roulette revealing the current standings of the Top 20 artistes could be reduced too.

Thanks to the rush, there was an underrun towards the end. And this gave Regine Wu (Li Jing) plenty of time to eat tofu…

“触感也好,质感也好”

How many times did this scene repeat last night…I pity Mark Chao for being the victim of this mass hugging session.

Don’t ignore me!

I wonder if you guys noticed this. Take a look at this clip first.

Tsk tsk Constance… Even just by watching this clip, I feel so paiseh for Jeanette Aw. Given the precious 90 seconds, it’s only natural to selectively shake hands with your closer colleagues haha…

Actually in this morning’s radio interview, Constance clarified that she really didn’t mean to ignore Jeanette. She was too overwhelmed with emotions at that time to notice, and will apologize to Jeanette etc…

On Standby

I was wondering, what if Joanne Peh’s name wasn’t called…

The guys behind were pretty confident eh. While Regine was trying to stall time, they were already stretching out their hands ready to shake.

Personally I don’t think Joanne’s dress was nice. The revealed part didn’t look very pleasant…

Kelong Girls…

Mark Lee insisted that Vivian Lai was kelong. He mentioned it once during last week’s skit and another time in yesterday’s interview. Somehow I agree too. Same goes for Michelle Chia. I would prefer Ann Kok to win instead. But I still feel that there is a political barrier deterring Ann from winning.

Better luck next time

Poor Terence Cao. From start to end his name was being mentioned frequently for not entering Top 10. Maybe his fans should buck up haha. These few years he has been dropping out of Top 10 quite often, so I don’t have very high hopes on him. But anyway I hope he can get nominated for his role in 五福到 next year.

Quitting?

Felicia Chin said on stage that this might be her last award. No she’s not being overly humble. In a post-interview she has expressed her contemplation to start off a new venture and try out other stuffs. On the other hand Joanne said that she will definitely stay.

Mixue

In 星光大道, Michelle Chong 庄米雪 was interviewing Michelle Yim 米雪. It’s probably more than coincidence that their names are so similar. Michelle Chong’s parents probably named her after Michelle Yim haha.

JJ & LL

So intimate.

Why did JJ choose such a 高难度 song to sing during the ceremony… I think he should sing songs like 加油 to console the non-winners.

招牌动作

This trailer of 爆料黑玫瑰 was shown during the commercial break:

After we returned from the break, when 米雪 called out for Jeanette...

Other noteworthy scenes:

'Where is Chen Liping ah?... Wah long time no see you've become fat! Eat a lot is it?'

*Sorry but making that face won't cover up your chubbiness =p*

暧昧 Kiss

'You hug 帅哥, I hug 主播!'

Here are the answers to my mini quiz.

1) If Chen Hanwei wins the Best Actor award this year, how many times would he have gotten this award?

He has won 4 four times already. One more to go to tie with Xie Shaoguang, who won 5. 五福 next year?

Maybe he can consider selling his black rose to Tay Pinghui. Talking about black rose, he will make a guest appearance in tomorrow’s 爆料黑玫瑰 as 刘一刀.

2) Only one of this year's Best Actress nominees (Ann Kok, Eelyn Kok, Jeanette Aw, Chen Liping, Hong Huifang) has gotten this award before. Who is she?

Give others a chance ba, Chen Liping! 有实力就是有实力. Jeanette may continue with her big annual productions.

3) Which actor has won the most Best Supporting Actor award? (Hint: Not Xie Shaoguang)

None other than the person who has created a lot of controversy - Huang Yiliang. (3 times winner) Xie Shaoguang won 2 times. So does Chen Guohua.

4) Despite being nominated for Best Supporting Actress for several years, Lin Meijiao has never gotten the award before. How many times has she been nominated?

Technically 6 times. Those who answered ‘5’ may not remember that she was first nominated back in 1995. Her next nomination after that was 2001. 继续加油吧。

Previously Chen Huihui was nominated 5 times consecutively until she finally won on her 6th. Xiang Yun and Hong Huifang had countless nominations (close to 10 I think) but they managed to win more than once.

This is one of the awards with the strongest competition, and I always look forward to this result every year. Happy that Constance won this time. She almost won in 2006 for 刑警2人组 when Hong Huifang emerged winner instead.

5a) Christopher Lee has collaborated with er-jie Fann Wong in countless dramas. How many dramas did he collaborate with ah-jie Zoe Tay?

Hmm, if anyone noticed, the answer was actually revealed in yesterday’s show.

Yes, ONCE and ONLY ONCE did Chris act alongside Zoe. This is in fact his debut drama after Star Search 1995. Those who are curious about what show this is, go find out yourselves haha. (Hint: it’s a telemovie)

Comparing his looks now and last time, I can’t help to sigh. And his costume yesterday didn’t match Fann’s. Far too casual (and haggard) for such formal ceremony.

5b) Mark Lee has starred as a lead in several Jack Neo movies, but only starred as a lead once in a Channel 8 drama. Which drama is it? (Hint: As a lead, not supporting)

The answer was almost revealed yesterday too, when he said he only acted in 3 dramas. Among them, this is the only one where he starred as a lead:

Most of you probably won’t remember this drama, where he acted alongside Xie Shaoguang, Sharon Au and Pan Lingling.

The 2nd drama is Holland V. This one you guys may remember.

The 3rd is this one:

Congrats to all the winners this year. =)

Mini Trivia

In view of the coming Star Awards, let's have a mini quiz!

Don't need to search the net or check databases to confirm the right answers. Just think about the questions, or try to guess the answers based on your knowledge of Star Awards.

In order not to spoil the trivia for others, please do not tag the answers on the tagboard haha.

1) If Chen Hanwei wins the Best Actor award this year, how many times would he have gotten this award?

2) Only one of this year's Best Actress nominees (Ann Kok, Eelyn Kok, Jeanette Aw, Chen Liping, Hong Huifang) has gotten this award before. Who is she?

3) Which actor has won the most Best Supporting Actor award? (Hint: Not Xie Shaoguang)

4) Despite being nominated for Best Supporting Actress for several years, Lin Meijiao has never gotten the award before. How many times has she been nominated?

5) We know that this year the two Lees will be getting the All Time Favourite Artiste award.

a) Christopher Lee has collaborated with er-jie Fann Wong in countless dramas. How many dramas did he collaborate with ah-jie Zoe Tay?

b) Mark Lee has starred as a lead in several Jack Neo movies, but only starred as a lead once in a Channel 8 drama. Which drama is it? (Hint: As a lead, not supporting)

Will reveal the answers in my next entry!

Comments on Star Awards 1st Night

Did not really look forward to the first night since it was mostly the not-so-interesting awards being given out. Not as interesting to the viewers than to the artistes themselves. As the nominees are backstage people, I've never seen them before and how they work. So even if they won an award I wouldn't feel much about it. But I've to agree that it's those backstage people who made the programmes possible.

However I felt that the skit imitating the backstage workers was pretty amusing. Even though I had no idea who the joke was referring to, it was still quite funny. Yea, the artistes (and higher-ups) seemed very very amused at the jokes.

However I was rather disappointed that the tennis segment of the first skit was copied wholesale from a Japanese variety show 超级变变变. Take a look at this.

I think the 斗嘴 by the villains was a little unnecessary. They were practically shouting at each other on stage, which made the performance very noisy and messy. (whereas Pat Mok was screaming away lol)

The only moment I was stunned during the show was when the 最受欢迎男角色 award was given out and they read the name '林佳杰'. "What?? Who the hell is '林佳杰'??" I thought. Realised who he was when the camera panned to him. I know someone will be very happy that he could win this award, but sorry to say that his role didn't leave any impression on me hahaa... Had more impression on 姚剑虹.

I actually had the same sentiment as Elvin Ng! I thought the 年度飞跃奖 would go to Aunty Lucy as 'she' is one of the hottest characters this year. Furthermore the hosts mentioned about '不同造型' and '不能说是男是女' which seemed to fit the description of Aunty Lucy haha. But then again, it would be pretty weird if Chongqing were to win the award, because this award is given to those who made significant progress. (ie. improvement from initially bad performance) Chongqing is already very good right from the start, so I don't think he deserves it. *Can you feel the sarcasm...*

Lastly, if I were to present an award to the best host out of the eight yesterday night, I would give it to Mark Lee. I don't really care if his language was bad or his comments offended anyone, but his frankness and humour indeed spiced up the atmosphere and made the otherwise boring ceremony more interesting. VERY ACCIDENT!

Changing Times

Came across this 1996 Mediacorp Telemovie in the newly revamped xinmsn. (used to be 新动网)

Maybe watching the first 5-10 min is enough. The plot and graphics look pretty cheesy, but this is something that can't be found in Mediacorp dramas nowadays. The producers are probably afraid of viewers' complaints about the cheesiness. But I can't really blame them for not producing such genre of dramas anymore, especially when the viewers' tastes are getting harder and harder to satisfy. Look at how badly the 2007 drama 凡间新仙人 was bashed at that time.

Felt nostalgic to see such 'classic' special effects. So silly, and funny at the same time. It brought a smile on my face, partly due to laughing at the effects.

Hui-ge was the lead in the telemovie. How rare. He's such a natural comedian. He doesn't need to say anything to make people laugh. A look at his facial expression is sufficient.

Saw a link to another telemovie. This time the lead is Moses Lim. Have you ever seen him starred as a lead in any Chinese dramas/movies? Maybe yes, quite a long time ago. But then it's still pretty rare.

Link's here...

Moses Lim vs Chew Chor Meng. What a weird combination. Guess who's the female lead.

There are quite a few telemovies available in full version. Aren't these supposed to belong to MobTV?

Feel like watching through those telemovies that I've missed in the past, but I doubt I'll feel the same as watching them 15 years ago. I might not even have the patience to sit through the whole movie too.

Perhaps it's time to move on. Times have changed.

Star Awards Predictions

It's the time of the year again haha. The ceremony will be something to look forward to amidst the preparation for exams.

*Want = Nominee I want whom to win
*Think = Nominee I think whom will win

最佳男主角

Want: No one in particular haha
Think: 陈汉玮/企鹅爸爸 (No strong competitors this year, unless Mediacorp wants to give newcomers a chance...)
Don't Want: 戴阳天/当我们同在一起 (I don't really fancy his acting)

最佳女主角

Want: 郭舒贤/煮妇的假期 (acting wise I think she is overdue for an award, after starring as female lead for so many years, but politics wise it might be rather difficult)
Think: 洪慧芳/煮妇的假期 (who could forget that mole lol)

最佳男配角

Want: 朱厚任/团圆饭 (he's more overdue than Ann Kok haha)
Think: 朱厚任/团圆饭 (I don't remember seeing him on stage before)
Don't Want: 张振寰/当我们同在一起 (Eeeks!)

最佳女配角

Want: 宋怡霏/双子星 (I prefer her baddie roles to 郭蕙雯's childish type)
Think: 洪慧芳/当我们同在一起 (her every role is so epic)

最佳电视剧

Want: 一切完美2 (can be a tribute to late 杨莉娜)
Think: 当我们同在一起 (what to say...大制作 mah)

最佳综艺节目

Want: 国记交意所 (one of the best variety show in the recent years)
Think: 国记交意所 (a really entertaining show. Thumbs up for Mark Lee's hosting too)

Top 10 Male:

郑斌辉
戚玉武
戴阳天
周崇庆
陈汉玮
黄俊雄
洪赐健
王禄江
张耀栋
郑各评

Top 10 Female:

陈靓暄
郭舒贤
欧萱
权怡凤
钟琴
瑞恩
赖怡伶
白薇秀
向云
庄米雪

Should be able to strike at least 60% for each Top 10 category ba. (otherwise my prediction must be really bad) Even better if strike 80%. I don't think 100% is possible, since there are always unexpected winners like 程旭辉 last year.

A Step into Reality

I've no plans to go overseas this coming holiday. I thought it would be good if I can continue to go for a trip abroad every school holiday, but things can't be that smooth and perfect. I've got to spend more time and work hard for the things I wish to enjoy. It's not just a simple twice-a-year affair.

Especially when I'm so busy this semester, it's really tempting to give myself a big break and slack at home until the next semester starts. However I've already had my share for the past two years. Time to get down to work!

The freedom might seem enjoyable for the first few days, but it gets boring when you realise that you've so much spare time on your hands. This is so unlike the school holidays during secondary school or JC days, where holiday assignments and preparation for tests, and most importantly CCA participation, never fail to keep us busy throughout. Holidays were never sufficient haha.

And thus, I applied for VIP (Vocation Internship Programme) during this semester break and went for the interview. Yup I was accepted. =)

This will be my first proper work experience, so I'm actually kind of nervous. (NS vocation and tutoring don't count right? Haha) Hopefully by exposing myself to the outside industry, I can better observe how harsh the world is...

A mere 12 weeks of little exposure. Then I shall return to the greenhouse again.

Need to start purchasing some office attire, though I'm quite reluctant to do so haha. Hope the company isn't that strict about dress code.

Even when typing all these, I'm beginning to appreciate being a student. =) But why do projects and exams have to spoil all the fun. >_<
