Today's a physically and mentally exhausting day for me, having to rush here and there (I brought it upon myself though).
More exhausting (but fun) days ahead. =)
Changing template in preparation for 3 weeks later. Stay tuned.

Semester 6 Overview
This is my first semester with less than 20 MC, yet I don’t feel any more relaxed than the previous semesters, thanks to some frustrating people.
Just to refresh my judging criteria:
Difficulty - Self explanatory.
Workload - Amount of lesson hours per week, assignments, tutorials, projects, self-study required, etc
Lecture - Enjoyability and understanding
Tutorial/Lab - Enjoyability and understanding
CN4203R – Polymer Engineering
Difficulty: ★★★
Workload: ★★
Lecture/Tutorial: ★★
I’ve mixed feelings about this module. In the first third of the semester, I dreaded going for the lecture because it was so boring. Furthermore the lecture sessions were consecutive (4-6pm and 11-1 pm next day), so it’s like sitting for a 3-4 hour lecture straight. In the second third, it became better as the pace slowed down and I started to enjoy it a little more.
The last third was peer teaching where each group was supposed to present on a certain topic. I was struck with confusion and felt that I couldn’t catch up at all. It was information overload without understanding, as the groups tried to cover as much content in the topic as possible, without giving much explanation. It’s like going through the entire calculus within 45 minutes, multiplied by 15 times. A perfect example of breadth without depth. Fortunately (or unfortunately) each group was to set a MCQ question on their topic. That means we had to study the entire topic just for one MCQ question. Because of this, some people probably shared their questions with each other to save the hassle of studying the huge chuck of information. Yea I’ve little faith in the integrity of university students. Those in the course should know haha.
Letting students set MCQ questions in the final exam looks like a lose-lose situation. Appears like everyone is out to kill each other. After suffering under killer questions set by lecturers, this provides a good opportunity for students to unleash their resentment on each other. I can’t help but to shake my head after the paper. We always rant about difficult and tricky questions, but yet we set them ourselves. What an irony. Sad for the group who set easy questions…
CN4215R – Food Technology and Engineering
Difficulty: ★★
Workload: ★
Lecture/Tutorial: ★★★
I’ve been wanting to take this module long time ago, because it involves food haha. Anyway why are my 4k modules easier and more slack than 3k and even 2k ones?! Lecturers play a very huge role in determining the workload. For the first half, we had a funny lecturer who likes to crack cold jokes, digress out of topic, long-winded, keeps repeating the same words over and over again. Thus the pace was really slow, but we had a great laugh every lecture. To add on, the tutorials were done in lecture format, where all the workings and solutions are already presented on the slides. So there was no need to attempt the questions at all. To further add on, the lecturer went through each and every slide of the lecture notes, telling us which slides are tested and which are not. Really specific. She must be one-of-a-kind in NUS. How I wish other lecturers are like that too, because it really lessens the load of studying haha.
On the other hand for the second half, it was total opposite. The lecturer does not crack jokes, but goes straight to the point. The pace was fast and the coverage was really efficient. As a result, lectures often ended early before time, and lessons had already ceased about a month before Week 13 ended.
CN3109 – Chemical Engineering Laboratory III
Difficulty: ★★
Workload: ★★★
Lab: ★★
I’m glad this lab module only has 4 experiments, because I already had enough writing (and editing) lab reports. The experiment itself was alright, though there were many hiccups faced, such as being unable to obtain the desired results or taking too long to complete. But the vexing thing was having to deal with all kinds of nonsense related to group report writing. Sometimes I wonder how some people can deviate so much out of track, cause great inconvenience to others, give empty promises, use their eloquence to obscure their incompetency, etc.
JS1101E/GEK1002 – Introduction to Japanese Studies
Difficulty: ★★
Workload: ★★★
Lecture: ★★★
Tutorial: ★★★★
Once again I challenged myself to history. The main objective of this module is to debunk common stereotypes of Japan, like samurai and what we normally perceive from animes and mangas. And find out how icons and behaviours have emerged from a historical context. Japan is not as pretty as it seems. Ok I already realised that when I began studying Japanese language. Coupled with the recent disaster, it gets uglier, sadly. Now, the attention is on Korea.
The lecture content was interesting but thanks to a lecturer who tends to flare up towards a slightest noise from the floor, lecture became a stifling affair. Everyone was made to keep their mouths tightly shut, for 1h 45min (no breaks in between). The Japanese concept of punctuality is also strictly enforced. Reminds me very much of those stringent lessons in olden days.
Tutorial was much better, because we had an understanding Singaporean tutor. (let’s not go into nationality…)
The group work is the one getting into my nerves. Right from the start (when forming the group and choosing project topic) there was already some discontentment. After that we went in circles, getting nowhere to the focus. Having unenthusiastic members in the group is a common issue, but having proactive members with a lot of opinions does have its own share of problems. We could hardly reach a consensus, even till the last meeting. Meeting time is often spent on arguing whose ideas are better. Thought we could complete it earlier, but it dragged on all the way. I have no hopes on a project which is produced out of compromise among members without consensus. Never mind, the ultimate purpose is making the grader happy, not us.
LAJ4203 – Newspaper Reading
Difficulty: ★★★★★
Workload: ★★★★★★★
Lecture: ★★★★
Tutorial: ★★★★
On top of frustrating people, this must be the culprit in making my semester busy. Ok it’s a 5 MC module after all. I find it hard to reply whenever someone asks me which level of Japanese I’m taking. This module does not have a number attached. The syllabus is like one step above level 6, but the prerequisite is only level 5. Thus there are some who took both level 6 and this module simultaneously.
Whatever the case, this module is about reading newspaper and listening to news reports. Sounds boring? Yea, probably to people who aren’t accustomed to reading news and current affairs. For a regular newspaper reader like me, it’s just a matter of reading it in another language, on other country’s matters. Based on my background knowledge on Japan, I’m glad I didn’t face much problem in understanding the articles. =)
There were many pros in the class. How I wish I could speak as well as them. Well, most are from Japanese Studies major and have been to Japan for exchange. Talking about that, I’m getting depressed already sigh…
---
So far my results haven't disappointed me. Hope this semester won't be an exception. Though that 'I-don't-think-I-did-well' feeling still lingers after every exam period.
Now I need to find a 1 MC module to make a multiple of 4. Any to recommend? Haha...

Comments on Star Awards
Last year it was an underrun, which triggered the mass hugging session. This time it’s back to overrun again. Looks like there can never be a time when the schedule can just fit in nicely. At least this was much better than credits simultaneously rolling when the final award-winner is making his/her speech (which happened some years ago).
The cause for the overrun? The talk-show (so-called 脱口秀) which I found was rather uninteresting and unnecessary. I often admire Mark Lee for his straightforwardness and humour, but during the talk it gave me the impression that he was just whining away on not getting an award, getting sore over Joanne Peh ‘stealing’ the host award.
Schedule aside, the guest list was pretty skewed too. It seems to cater to the fangirls, as it was dominated by male artistes from Taiwan. (Actually Jimmy Lin was supposed to come, but I think his father just passed away)
The theme of the ceremony was fresh, and the opening was pretty grand too. The unconventional way of delivering the result card to the presenter seemed innovative at first, but slowly lost its novelty as the ceremony proceeds.
Wrong Award?
Realised something was wrong when the winner was thanking the hospital when it is the award ceremony that won the Best Special Variety. So paiseh haha. I guess such things happen when you’re involved in too many nominated works.
First-Time Veterans
This year saw many veterans getting an award for the first time in the category.
Terence Cao was nominated a few times (long ago) for Best Actor, and clinched a few Top 10 popularity award (in the past when he was still quite popular). This is the first time he won an award in the acting category since he entered the industry in 1989.
Huang Wenyong won Best Comedy Performer and 成就奖 many years ago, but this is the first time he won an award in the popularity category since he joined the acting career in err…1981? Not to mislead, he was actually quite popular in the past, but by the time Star Awards began, he no longer had the idol-image. According to him, much of the votes probably came from the participants of the several tour groups he has led. Not to forget his ‘impressive track record’ in the Top 10/5 nominations – he was nominated consecutively every year since 1994 (from when Star Awards started), but never got in until now. A whopping 17 years of wait! Credits to Wiki for the information. Don’t know if it’s really true, but from my memory it seems so. I keep seeing his name being kicked out during the roulette. (along with other veterans like 刘谦益 and 陈澍城) He has yet to get any acting-related awards.
Compared to the first two veterans, she seems to be less appreciated haha. Pan Ling Ling is nominated for the first time this year, since she joined SBC in 1988. Despite being a 演技派 actress, she never had any nominations in acting awards before. Good for her, she won at her first nomination. (Her fan, JJ ,must be happy to hear that) She had won the Top 10 popularity award a few times before however.
Like what A-ya said, I ‘看他们的戏长大的’. So I’m quite happy for them.
I Am Back
Two artistes marked their return to the same award after 10 years.
Ann Kok won a few Top 10 awards during her heyday (when everyone was obsessed by her figure, like Fiona Xie last time). After she left TCS for HK in 1999, returned as Mediaworks artiste, then back to Mediacorp, she had never won any awards since. But her acting has indeed improved a lot. Hope to see her get an acting award in the future, if she still decides to stay in the industry.
During the peak of 城人杂志, it was a battle between Kym Ng and Sharon Au (and Bryan Wong?) for the Best Host. Kym Ng clinched the award twice successively. When she left for Mediaworks, Sharon Au took over. Bryan Wong has also won since the unification. Finally Kym could touch the award again this year, though she seems to have lost touch with popularity awards.
57% of predictions correct for 最佳 category, and 90% for Top 10 Male and Female. Not bad...

The Big Question Mark
Looks like I’ll miss out on the most anticipated national event this year.
All these while, I had been hoping for the day to fall on the end of May earliest. According to the widespread speculations, it was quite unlikely to drag on until then, especially when the parties are already all-prepared to face the coming contest.
Frankly I’m not really keen in voting. For us citizen voters, it’s just a very simple process. I had tagged along my parents to the polling centre on two occasions, and it seemed like a mere errand, like going to the post office to post a letter etc (I know nobody does that nowadays).
Basically you just head to the registration counter to register with your registration slip, get the voting slip, queue up in front of the booth, enter the booth, mark a cross on the voting slip, fold it into half and insert into a box.
That’s why I don’t see how it is so exciting to vote for the first time. We have many chances in the future (maybe). Yea we get a say in deciding our MPs, but ultimately it depends on how our fellow neighbours decide. Yea I’m pretty pacified when it comes to politics.
So why am I so concerned about missing out on the polling day?
I’m more interested in the suspense which comes during that night. From bottom to top nationwide, everyone is thrown into great suspense. People will be guessing and speculating while watching the live broadcast, and such atmosphere is pretty electrifying. What’s more it only comes once in 5 years.
Each contested constituency is like a subject module. Hearing the election results is like checking up the module grades, except that the former is usually announced one by one, which further enhances the excitement factor. If all areas are contested, it would be like looking at 27 module grades haha.
Whatever the case, I might have to wait another 5 years to experience such nationwide suspense again.

Star Awards Prediction
Once again it's time for prediction!
Like the previous years:
*Want = Nominee I want whom to win
*Think = Nominee I think whom will win
Want: No one in particular haha
Think: 戚玉武/走进走出 (he was pretty good in this show, as a villain)
(I've grown to like her acting, she's really a versatile actress)
Think: 瑞恩/我在你左右 (never knew she could handle such emotional roles so well)
Want: 曹国辉/五福到 (this is his most 颓废 look I've ever seen haha)
Think:
Want: 郭淑贤/走进走出 (she was so close to winning so many time, hope this time it won't be another disappointment)
(I still don't get how she managed to be nominated...)
(I really like his style of hosting in this show)
Think: Pornsak/食在好源头 (but won't it be weird if he wins? since the rest of the nominees are veterans...)
Want: 最火搭档 (the sequel is coming!)
Think: 破天网 (well...blockbuster of the year mah)
Want: 食在好源头 (good host + good theme)
Think: 食在好源头 (the viewership was quite high also, and they even re-telecast the 精华 version during primetime)
Top 10 Male
Pornsak
Top 10 Female
Last year I remembered that I achieved a 90% strike rate for the Top 10 Male category. Hopefully this year I can achieve similar results. With so many 'princesses' gone, I find it harder to predict Top 10 Female this year haiz.

Last year I remembered that I achieved a 90% strike rate for the Top 10 Male category. Hopefully this year I can achieve similar results. With so many 'princesses' gone, I find it harder to predict Top 10 Female this year haiz.

Forces of Nature (add-on)
Recall some time ago I posted a video on the Japan tsunami?

A woman was seen rushing into her car, trying to drive away from the tsunami. So did she manage to survive? Some said she might be dead.

The tsunami washed in too fast and her car was caught by the waves.

The waves shattered the glass and she quickly swam out of the car. Fortunately she managed to get up the roof of a building.

She was frantically looking out for her son, whom she feared might not have escaped in time. Luckily he was seen to be at the rooftop of another building.

After spending one night at the roof, she managed to get out of the rubble.

As she was being interviewed, she said that many people were screaming and shouting at her from the hill, when she was rushing into her car.
She is one lucky person, but unfortunately not many shared the same fate.
On the other hand, it really sucks to go through months of anticipation, anxiety, planning and excitement for nothing.

If it's free, why not?
Never had luck in winning freebies from radio stations before. Probably because I'm listening to one of the most popular radio stations in SG, where the hotline is forever scorching hot, and SMS flows like tap water. Due to this reason, I also don't bother to try.
After witnessing so many success cases recently, I had the urge to try my luck for once. After all most of the time I knew the answers to the questions that the DJ posed.
Well, it was indeed a pleasant surprise, when I heard my name and NRIC being announced over the radio. =)
And thus I won a pair of tickets to:
Tanya & the Cities 2011 Live Concert
9 Apr 2011
Sat, 8.00PM
Pretty shocking right haha, considering I'm not a Tanya fan. Then again, as I start to ponder why I could get those tickets so easily, probably it's really true that Tanya's popularity in SG cannot be compared to other local singers like JJ and Stefanie. Fewer people were competing for the tickets, so yeah... Just like how tickets for concerts by non-mainstream singers such as Cheer Chen are easier to win. Sad reality.
This is Tanya's first large-scale concert in SG, despite being in the industry for more than 10 years and having obtained several awards both locally and internationally (Taiwan). Not really sure how well the tickets are selling.
I know quite a few songs from her, mainly album hits played in radio. Hence I don't think I'll feel 'lost' during the concert, though her 'serene' style of singing doesn't really strike a chord in me (oops). But anyway she definitely has the caliber and it's worth listening to her sing.
So, anyone willing to watch her concert with me? =)
